Nobody can guarantee you a place in AI answers, but you can put the documented basics in place: allow crawlers, publish clear content, keep your Google Business Profile current.

Quellen: Google Search Central, Google-Crawler-Übersicht, OpenAI, Perplexity, Anthropic. Stand: Oktober 2026.

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

User-agent: Claude-SearchBot
Allow: /

# Optional: Nutzung für Modelltraining ausschließen
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

User-agent: ClaudeBot
Disallow: /

User-agent: Google-Extended
Disallow: /

Beachten Sie zwei Grenzen.

Was erlaubt ist, steht in Google-Bewertungen sammeln: Was ist erlaubt?.

More people now ask an assistant instead of clicking through ten results. For local businesses that raises a new question: will your company be named when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for a provider in Vienna? This article separates what is documented from what agencies like to claim, and ends with a checklist you can work through without specialist knowledge.

How AI assistants choose sources: what is documented

The honest answer first: none of the providers publishes a ranked list of factors. Only basic conditions are documented. In its documentation on AI features in Search, Google states that a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. There are no further requirements or special optimizations, and you do not need new machine-readable files or AI text files.

Google also describes a technique called query fan-out: the system runs several related searches on subtopics and collects sources for them. For you, this means a page should not only be good for one search term but also answer side questions, such as process, service area or duration.

OpenAI is just as sober. According to the OpenAI crawler documentation, sites that block OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt will not appear in ChatGPT search answers. The company says nothing more about weighting. Anything you hear about "the ChatGPT algorithm" is observation or guesswork.

What one study on local AI recommendations shows (and what it does not)

In September 2026 BrightLocal published a large analysis. It covered 200,085 local searches for 1,342 locations over 60 days, across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. It is one of the larger publicly available data sets, but it has limits. The examples are clearly from US cities, and the study measures observations, not causes.

Where AI answers about local businesses cite fromBar chart: share of 1,967,762 citations in a BrightLocal study. Three findings from the BrightLocal study are useful for your planning:

  • Websites matter. Business websites made up 42% of all citations. Google Business Profile supplied 28.63%, Yelp 9.53%, Facebook 2.23%.
  • Maps is not AI. Google Maps mentioned the tracked businesses in 66% of searches, the AI surfaces in only 32 to 38%. According to the study, a strong Maps ranking does not guarantee an AI recommendation.
  • Answers fluctuate. On repeated searches, result lists overlapped by only 20 to 33% on average. Between ChatGPT and the two Google surfaces, agreement was around 19 to 20%.
Visible in Maps does not mean visible in AI answersBar chart: Google Maps mentions the tracked businesses in 66 percent of searches, ChatGPT in 33, Google AI Mode in 32 and AI Overviews in 38 percent.Visible in Maps does not mean visible in AI answersGoogle Maps66%ChatGPT33%Google AI Mode32%Google AI Overviews38%

The consequence: nobody can credibly promise you the top spot in AI answers. What makes sense is to create the conditions that also apply to classic search, and to check deliberately whether you get mentioned.

Step 1: Do not lock out AI crawlers by accident

This is the quickest lever, and it is often overlooked. Some security plugins, hosting settings or CDN rules block unknown bots across the board. Then an assistant can never read your site, however good it is. What matters is that providers run several crawlers with different purposes:

ProviderCrawlerPurpose according to providerEffect in robots.txt
GoogleGooglebotSearch, AI Overviews, AI ModePage must be indexed and snippet-eligible
GoogleGoogle-ExtendedTraining future Gemini models, grounding in Gemini appsNo effect on inclusion or ranking in Google Search
OpenAIOAI-SearchBotShowing sites in ChatGPT searchBlocked: no appearance in ChatGPT search answers
OpenAIGPTBotTraining modelsBlocked: content not used for training
OpenAIChatGPT-UserActions requested by a userrobots.txt may not apply
PerplexityPerplexityBotResults in Perplexity, no model trainingAllowing is recommended

AnthropicClaude-SearchBotQuality of search resultsBlocking may reduce visibility in Claude answers
AnthropicClaudeBotModel trainingBlocked: content not used for training

Sources: Google Search Central, Google crawler overview, OpenAI, Perplexity, Anthropic. As of October 2026.

The split between training and search is the important part. If you do not want your content to flow into models, you can block training crawlers and still allow search crawlers. OpenAI states that each setting is independent, and that robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to take effect. Whether to block training is a business decision we cannot make for you. A sample file for orientation:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

User-agent: Claude-SearchBot
Allow: /

# Optional: opt out of model training
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

User-agent: ClaudeBot
Disallow: /

User-agent: Google-Extended
Disallow: /

Two limits apply. First, according to Google, robots.txt is a crawler control and not a way to keep pages out of the index. Second, not every bot complies, and user-triggered fetches such as Perplexity-User or ChatGPT-User do not necessarily follow the file.

Step 2: Give clear answers on your website

An assistant can only quote what is stated clearly on the page. So write the facts customers ask about as plain sentences, not only in images, sliders or PDFs. This applies to services, service area, opening hours, process, directions and contact options.

A structure that works on each service page: an opening paragraph that says in two sentences what you offer, for whom and where. Below it, a section on the process, a section with the most common questions and a short block with company details. How to build location pages without duplication is covered in our article on location pages without doorway pages.

Unique, helpful content is the foundation. That sounds trivial, but it rules out a lot: interchangeable industry copy, mass-produced city pages and answers every competitor has word for word. What you really know, such as typical follow-up questions from your customers, belongs on the page.

Step 3: Google Business Profile and structured data

In the BrightLocal analysis, Google Business Profile is the most important directory source. It is also where Google describes local businesses most directly. According to Google Business Profile help, businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results. Keep categories, opening hours, services and photos current. You will find a walkthrough in our article on optimizing your Google Business Profile.

Stay sober about structured data. Google says no special markup is needed for its AI features, and we know of no proven effect of schema on citations in ChatGPT or Perplexity. Still, LocalBusiness markup makes sense when it matches the visible details: it makes name, address and services unambiguous for machines, so no system has to guess. That is why we include schema markup in website projects, but we do not promise AI mentions for it. The technical details are in structured data for local businesses.

Step 4: Build reviews and mentions

According to Google, the number of reviews and the ratings feed into a business's prominence, as do links from other websites. For classic local results that is documented. Whether and how strongly assistants weigh reviews, the providers do not say. What is certain: the Google profile and review platforms appear as sources in the study, and genuine, traceable reviews are the stronger argument for people anyway.

Ask satisfied customers for a review, but only within the rules. What is allowed is covered in collecting Google reviews: what is allowed. Mentions on other sites, such as an industry directory, local press or a partner business, help the overall picture. What counts is that name, address and phone number match everywhere.

llms.txt: a sober assessment

The llms.txt file is meant to give AI systems an overview of your content. In June 2026, Google's John Mueller said, as reported by Search Engine Journal, that the file has existed for years but none of the AI systems use it. Its value is "purely speculative". That fits with Google's AI Overviews documentation, which explicitly says you do not need new machine-readable files.

A practical view: the file does little harm if it is correct, but there is no proven ranking or citation effect. Spend your time first on crawlability, content and your profile. If a provider that sends you customers explicitly asks for the file, the situation changes, and it is quickly created.

Checklist: check in an hour, implement in a few weeks

  • Open your robots.txt (your-domain.com/robots.txt) and check that OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot and Googlebot are allowed.
  • Check hosting, security plugin or CDN for blanket blocking of unknown bots.
  • In Google Search Console, confirm that your key pages are indexed. According to Google, AI traffic from Google is counted in the Web report. Setup is explained in setting up Google Search Console.
  • One page per service, with a clear opening paragraph, process, FAQ and contact details as plain text.
  • Keep Google Business Profile complete and current, review categories and services.
  • Use LocalBusiness markup only with details that are also visible on the page.
  • Make name, address and phone number consistent across website, profile and directories.
  • Collect and answer genuine reviews regularly.
  • Once a month, ask 5 to 10 typical customer questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, note the answers and check whether and how you are named.

You can test the first part of this list with our free website check. The groundwork behind it is in our guide to local SEO for DACH SMEs.

When this does not fit

Not every business needs to appear in AI answers. If you work mostly through referrals and regular customers, fix your website and profile first. The study data comes from the US, and we know of no comparable public analysis for Austria. And because answers fluctuate so much, a single test with one question proves nothing.

Be careful with offers that sell "guaranteed AI placements". Neither Google nor OpenAI nor Perplexity offers a lever an agency could buy. If you want to know where you stand, we are happy to look at it in a free introductory call. Our SEO and Google Business Profile service describes how we work.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to do anything special to appear in Google AI Overviews?

According to Google, no. Your page must be indexed and eligible for snippets; the documentation lists no additional requirements or special files. Good, clear content and clean technology remain the foundation.

Should I block GPTBot and other AI crawlers?

That depends on whether you want to allow your content to be used for model training. Training and search crawlers can be controlled separately. If you want to appear in ChatGPT answers, do not block OAI-SearchBot. For Google, Google-Extended does not affect Google Search.

Does an llms.txt file help visibility?

No effect is proven. A Google representative said in June 2026 that no AI system uses the file. You can create one, but do not expect results.

How do I find out whether my business is named in AI answers?

Ask typical customer questions in several assistants and record the results over several weeks. Because answers fluctuate strongly according to BrightLocal, the trend counts, not the single test.

Is GEO something entirely different from SEO?

The basics overlap heavily: crawlable pages, helpful content, a well-kept profile. What is new is mainly the additional crawlers and the question of whether you are named in an answer, not just listed in results.
